Pregnancy and those troublesome symptoms.

"What happened? Pregnancy is not an illness but I'm feeling really rotten!"
I am hearing this from a lot of expectant Mums and of course this is a time when medications either can't be used or are undesirable. It seems such a shame that when you should be looking forward to the next few months you are plagued with a series of horrid, niggling symptoms. Although individually these symptoms are minor, collectively they can really drag you down and the only support that is often offered is that you are told to "grit your teeth, it'll pass". Only the other day I was treating a young woman who had spent a long time trying to become pregnant and when at last she did, both her and her partner were over the moon. Next time I saw her she was in tears and wondering, in her own words, "why she had bothered". The pregnancy was progressing well and in fact she looked a picture of health but by the end of the day a mixture of nausea, heart burn and complete exhaustion was beginning to show itself in the dark rings under her eyes.
"If I'm like this now," she told me, "what am I going to be like by the end of my pregnancy."
Apprehension is natural during pregnancy, especially when it's the first time. But when this apprehension starts to turn to worry, or worse still, real anxiety something needs to be done.
It is wonderful to be able to do something to help. Even if the symptoms aren't completely eradicated they can often be eased to the point where they are of little concern.
So, don't put up with these things and spoil this amazing time.
Acupuncture, especially the system I practice, has a long, long history of treating all stages of pregnancy. Further informations: www.threeages.com

Period Pain and Acupuncture

Very few women go through life without any discomfort before or during their periods. For many it is often the "grit teeth and get on with it" week in their cycle. But for some it is a seriously debilitating week (often longer) when the pain and discomfort is so severe that life has to be put on hold. No one should have to put up with this sort of hell each month. Medication is frequently prescribed but the symptoms may still be pretty unbearable and few people relish the idea of taking any medication on a long term basis. I went to school with someone who's period pain was so severe that the colour would drain from her face until it took on a green-ish hue, and then she would pass out. Most women have suffered or know someone who has suffered similarly and it is truly awful.

"The News"

I am sure there are millions of people who feel the same as me ..... I am fed up to the back teeth of negative, fear-promoting, divisive news. There are so many positives - on a small scale you only have to look at the kindnesses of friends and neighbours - but we are constantly bombarded by the mainstream media in a way that is increasingly detrimental, both to our individual health and well-being and to our society as a whole. Those "small kindnesses", if allowed to grow will flourish into a healthier and more balanced society and is that not what we should expect and desire at this point in our evolution. We have thousands of years of history to support the fact that fear and division do nothing to promote empathy, balance or unity (or any of the other qualities that a civilized society should value). "Good News Days" may sound very 4th form but they are more important than ever.
I think it's time that we recognise that it is the fear and division that have controlled us for so long and we should be emotionally grown up enough to control ourselves as a society in a much more positive way.
My Good News.
I have a husband who is funny and supportive and I love him dearly. I have family who are crazy and funny but I love them dearly. I have a step-daughter who is fabulous and I love her dearly. I am fortunate enough to have many friends who have helped and supported my endeavours over the years and I love them dearly. Thank you all, for being in my life.

Children's Health

It is especially rewarding to treat children. They respond well to Stems and Branches acupuncture. They find this gentle style of acupuncture much less daunting and as it goes to the constitutional level their symptoms often respond very quickly.

Post natal care

Having practiced acupuncture for 11 years I am still delighted when it shows itself to be so effective. One of my favourite areas of treatment is anti and post-natal care.
I believe it to be really important to get the word out to women, who may not be aware, that acupuncture can give relief from morning sickness, heart burn, restless legs, pubic pain, to name a few of the common symptoms.

Acupuncture and pregnancy.
I know that some acupuncture practitioners decline to treat during pregnancy. Whilst, in some ways, this is understandable it seems a shame because treatment can be beneficial for so many problems at this time. At a time when any expectant mum is concerned about taking medications for sickness, nausea, pain (to name just a few symptoms) a few trips to a qualified acupuncturist could be very helpful.
During my practice I have had the privilege to treatment many mums-to-be and it is wonderful to know that whilst treating mum, babe is also getting a helping hand.
If you are pregnant and have uncomfortable symptoms of one sort or another, or if you would just like to support your general health during your pregnancy, pay your acupuncturist a call.

Welcome!

Hello and thanks for visiting.
I have just opened this blog because a lot of people are coming up with really useful questions and many of these questions are being asked more than once.
Please feel free to post comments and ask further questions regarding acupuncture, or in fact any interesting information about health issues.
I will be posting interesting bits and pieces as and when they arise.

Here's one now. This is nothing to do with acupuncture but something worth checking out;
onions... if you suffer from digestive problems you might like to take onions out of you diet for a week or two. Onions can carry bacteria within their layers which can really upset the stomach. Irritable bowel problems can be eased if onions are elliminated. But be vigilant because onions can turn up in many guises in many food products.
If you suffer from IBS-type symptoms you will probably have looked at all the usual foods but may not have thought of onions.
